About Us
Perkins and wife Millicent have been polishing, scoring, and staining concrete floors since 1995 when most people had never heard of it. With every concrete slab a unique canvas, we consider concrete polishing and staining an ART ! Working with architect firms, home builders, commercial developers, and decorators, we have created many unique floors to meet their customers styles. We create floors for many styles, from Very Contemporary, Old World, to Country and Western. We have extensive experiance with ranch house and lodge floors. We have worked on many beautiful ranches from Texas to Wyoming. If you like the idea of a floor that looks like it is covered with weathered, aged leather, with very low maintenance, you will love our floors !
Based in West Texas, we have never advertised and have worked all across the state of Texas and beyond, just from word of mouth.
We travel anywhere in the US and look forward to working with you to create a floor that is unique to your style !
After looking at other stained concrete floors that are orange, spotty, and covered with scratched urethane, you will know your floor was created by Stained Concrete Art.
Technical
I know there are many who like to do-it-yourself, but unlike paint, acid staining is a 7 step process that takes 5 to 7 days with specialized tools, and you don't see a final result until the very end. The acid manufacturers and videos found on the internet make the staining process sound easy because they have to sell their product, BUT, what they can't tell you, without seeing it, is the condition of YOUR concrete slab !
Concrete mixes vary, not only in different parts of the country because of difference in materials, but also in different loads to a single slab. A slab may, or may not, change many different times from one end to the other due to variations in the cement mix, weather conditions when poured, how finished, surface hardness, porosity, etc...etc...Believe me, it goes on and on and I continue to learn new process techniques.
It takes experience from reading many different slabs to get the best results from each job!
Although every step of the process is extremely important, the most important is the finish or sealer !
BEWARE: DO NOT USE LACQUER, URETHANE, OR ACRYLIC FINISHES !!!
Although they produce a high gloss shine and looks great AT FIRST, they wear off easily and is VERY HIGH MAINTENANCE ! The floor will scratch, scuff, turn white, MUST be resealed periodically, and ends up being VERY COSTLY in the long run !
If a contractor uses this finish, it usually equates to INEXPERIANCE !!!
If you are looking for a contractor to stain a floor, the most important thing to do is go look at their work ! Many pictures are of jobs that has just been completed with these finishes. Ask to look at a floor that has been lived on for several momths and believe me, you will get a whole different picture of what they look like, as well of the maintenance ! Anyone can make a tuff steak look good in a picture!! I get at least 3 calls a week asking if I can repair scratches in floors with these finishes. In most cases the floors are only a couple of months old. When a floor is done correctly, you will not have any orange spotting, scuffing or scratches.
With our finish, besides vacuuming and occasional damp mopping, you will get years of maintenance free living.
We have never had a call back from a customer with major problems with our floors !
Home Owners / New Construction
If you are considering using the concrete staining and scoring process, prior to pouring the concrete slab, please conctact me and I will get to you and your building contractor, important technical information about the type of concrete to use, how to finish, and ways to minimize damage to the floor, If the slab has already been poured, contact me as soon as possible no matter what phase of construction you are in. Further into construction, the risk is higher of damaging the floor and the cost of staining is higher because of prep and cleaning of the slab.
Building Contractors / New Construction
I preffer to start the process right after the house is dried in, before plumbers, electricians etc.. I know some of you have had some bad experiences and may think I'm crazy but with our process we can stain and put on what I call a construction finish at this point. You can then complete construction with minimum cover and damage to the floor. I come back after construction is complete and take off the construction finish and refinish the floor to new. All the new floors in our portfolio were done this way.
Give me a call and I will be happy to meet and give you more technical information.
Existing Floors
Yes we do existing floors that has been covered with tile, carpet, or vinyl. It is usually problematic because the adhesives used to hold down these coverings, paint overspray from baseboards and cabinets, has to be cleaned and carpet tack holes have to be filled before staining. Some times these problems prevents the stain from penetrating evenly, but more often adds character and makes a beautiful floor. Floors that has had the old vinyl tile with the black adhesive make absolutely beautiful floors!
Patios: New or Existing
Patios can be as beautiful as interior floors without costly stamping or overlays. DO NOT BROOM FINISH !

Scoring and Entry Art
Anything you can imagine. That's the beauty. I will show you different patterns, or design your own to create a floor that fits your style in your home or business.

Colors
Acid staining actually changes the color of concrete by chemically reacting with the lime and minerals used in the concrete mix. Reaction will be more or less in different areas of the floor, thus leaving a natural mottling effect with many different hues of the same color. The color chart shows base colors and can vary a few shades lighter or darker because every concrete pour is different.
NOTE: Since acid staining is not a paint, I can not guarantee an exact color !
Buckskin suede tone with carmel marbling Rust brown resembling old leather

Tortoise shell black with brown marbling Soft blue patina with undertones of green

Terra cotta with rust and soft brown hues Amber hued undertones

Soft grey green resembling aged Italian marble Rich earthy brown for an old world look

Pricing
I have to say that the concrete staining business is on of the fastest growing self start busineses in the country. People are going to schools to learn to stain and graduating in a week as a "professional". I guess what i'm trying to say is, "YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR" definitely holds true in this business. IT TAKES EXPERIANCE !!! Tile is going to cost about $3.00 - $3.50/sqft to install plus cost of thin set and sealer, thats before buying the tile. REMEMBER, THIS IS POLISHED AND STAINED CONCRETE !!!
